The Myths That Surround Slot Machines

Their are many myths or beliefs that surround the gaming industry, these myths always instill in players methods or tricks that are the sure-thing for winning at that given game and with slot machines it is no different. There are many myths that surround slot machines and putting any belief in these myths will definately reduce your bankroll.

Myth 1: If a machine hasn't jackpoted for a period of time, the likelyhood of it doing so is increased.

As all payouts are determined by a Random Number Generator (RNG) which is programmed into the machines chip, there is no more certainty that a machine will payout sooner or later, the results are truly random. All slots meet a payout criteria (payout percentage) that is programmed into the chip itself, however, how and when the payout occurs is truly random.

Myth 2: There is more chance of a win by pulling the arm of the slot machine than pushing the spin button.

Because the RNG determines the outcome once the reels start spinning there is no difference whatsoever in using the arm of the slot or pressing the spin button. The RNG is constantly selecting numbers even when a game isn't in play, once that spin button is pressed or the arm lever pulled the outcome is decided before the reels stop spinning. The spinning of the reels is purely for entertainment purposes.

Myth 3: Machine payouts are always greater on the weekends.

Casinos may change payout percentages for players at certain times of the day or days of the week, however the payouts still are dictated by the RNG, so the chance of a payout on a weekend is no greater whatsoever than at any other time of day.

Myth 4: Slot machines can be loosened or tightened easily.

Though it is possible for a casino to change the computer chip (and thus increase the payout percentage) this is generally not done in tightly regulated regions, the payout (a win) is still determined by the RNG.

Myth 5: It's possible to spot a machine that is going to payout.

There is no way to determine if a machine is going to payout just by looking at it (studying it's results), as in all circumstances the RNG determines the payout and nothing else.

Myth 6: Loose machines are placed in specific locations within the casino.

Although if may be true that casinos may place higher payout slot machines (high payout percentage) in certain traffic areas, they also move these machines around frequently.
